Gartner Highlights DataGravity in File Analysis Software Report

Last month, Gartner released its “Market Guide for File Analysis Software.” It provides a good overview at an important emerging technology segment of the broader information management domain. Gartner coined the term file analysis (FA) to denote tools that “analyze, index, search, track and report on file metadata and, in some cases, file content, enabling organizations to take action on files according to what was identified.” Gartner sees the need for this segment coming from the fundamental challenges surrounding unstructured data.

“Organizations are struggling with ever-growing and uncontrolled data perplexity. Progressive and cost-conscious organizations are realizing they need a better understanding of their data to effectively manage their growing storage environments as well as to facilitate business use of data that has previously been ‘dark.’”

The DataGravity Discovery Series and our unique data-aware storage strategy encompasses and builds on many of the capabilities and benefits Gartner sees in FA. In addition to our core storage and data protection capabilities, our customers are seeing tremendous benefits from the product’s capabilities in governance, PII/PCI/PHI identification and remediation, data retention analysis and policies, content search and reuse, and other FA use cases.

Gartner recognizes that while DataGravity provides many of the capabilities of a file analysis solution, we take a different, broader approach.

“DataGravity provides a unique approach to file analysis as it is a storage system that has built file analysis technology directly into the primary storage. DataGravity acts as a primary storage device but also provides a secondary tier that is used for multiple purposes including backup and disaster recovery. It is on this secondary tier that file analytics technology is applied. With this unique approach, storage analytics, optimization and reclamation becomes a main use case. Additional use cases are retention policy enforced-information governance supporting e-discovery, security and corporate risk mitigation.”

As Gartner indicates, we see file analysis as one piece of a larger mandate companies face to unlock the value of their data and surface actionable insights about their businesses. Want to see how we do it? Register for a DataGravity Discovery Series demo.
