A Gigaom Structure Recap on the Future of Storage – and More
If you didn’t make it to Gigaom Structure earlier this month, you missed hearing DataGravity CEO and Co-founder Paula Long discuss the future of storage – and the related technology landscape – with Actifio CEO Ash Ashutosh and Gigaom Senior Writer Barb Darrow. But that’s okay, you can watch the replay of their lively session, and we’ve got a roundup of Paula’s key quotes for you right here.
On extracting insight from your data: “Your data holds a lot of information about your company; you just don’t know how to ask it. We’re giving your data and your storage a voice, and then we’re going to turn that into information that is actionable.”
On the Internet of Things: “We’re going to have gazillions of records, and we’re going to have to figure out how to find and sift and sort, and…there will be a whole new real-timeness of data.” Click to tweet.
On the democratization of IT: “I don’t believe IT is just someone managing plugs and discs. I believe IT is actually managing how the information flows in and out of the organization. I think it’s moving up into being a business partner. IT people get that.”
On fixing symptoms versus curing root problems: “Make sure you’re creating data for the right reasons, you can use it, you’re segmenting it in a way you understand what it is, you understand the business value and you’re not protecting everything equally — because it doesn’t all have equal value.”
On the future of data protection: “It’s broadening out to protecting information, and how does information flow, and how do people interact with information, and who has rights to interact with information. And I’m betting you’re going to see legislation in the next three to five years that’s going to make it crucial that you have a way to track data governance and looking at how data is being accessed and by whom.” Click to tweet.
Overall it was a lively debate and a sign of interesting times ahead for the storage industry, and for DataGravity!Like This
