Is your vRealize management pack data-aware?

One of the great things about my job is I get to talk to folks about how to become data-aware and how DataGravity can help them achieve this goal. Usually, I’m talking to them about how to find sensitive data in file containers such as SMB shares and NFS exports. We can also find sensitive data in virtual machines, and moreover, surface and consolidate this data with other operational data through VMware tools like vRealize Operations (vROPs) and vRealize Log Insight.

I want to take this opportunity to give a brief overview of our vROPs implementation and why our customers may want to use it. In this blog post, I’ll cover what it is, how to obtain it and some key reasons why you should start using it.

For those of you who are VMware admins (vAdmins) but aren’t using vROPs, let me provide a quick overview. VMware vRealize is a suite of tools that can be used for automating and managing IT operations in your virtual infrastructure. Predictive analytics and dynamic thresholds help you keep an eye on your infrastructure. It also provides vAdmins with visibility into infrastructure elements that are currently having issues, as well as elements which may have an issue in the future. Simply put, by installing the DataGravity Management Pack, you’ll gain insights that no other vROPs management pack can show you.

When you download and install the DataGravity Management Pack for vRealize Operations from the VMware Solution Exchange, you have access to dashboards that serve up a plethora of information. Monitor operations – Measure performance, capacity and a whole lot more

Like other storage vendors, we show performance and capacity metrics and alert you proactively when there is a problem. However, because we are data-aware, we also propagate a variety of data analytics not available from other storage resources. We show you how much dormant data you have on your Discovery Series appliance as well as which datastores and VMs are at risk due to the exposure of sensitive data. You can see this in the image below.

Beyond operations – Insights into the data stored in your VMs

When I select a VM, I’m able to get more detail. I can view all of the sensitive data tags such as credit card numbers, US social security numbers and Canadian Social Identification numbers (SINs). Additionally, there are other built-in tags (IP addresses, US postal addresses, URLs, email addresses) which have been identified within files residing inside this VM. You can even build custom tags within the DataGravity interface. For example, in the image below, the H Conf tag was defined to discover all content that has the words, “highly confidential,” embedded in files). It is also possible to see how each tag has been trending over time–you can see the ebb and flow of sensitive data in and out of the VM.

From any of the dashboards, you can select an appliance, datastore, or VM to see the active alerts and take the appropriate action.
